A Storm on a Hill
Q.(i) How did the villagers counts the force of the wind in their daily life ?
Answer : The villagers counted wind force by observing trees, dust, and movement.
Q.(ii) What was said to be the cause behind the appearance of ghosts on Haunted Hill ?
Answer : Usha’s grandfather said, during a terrible storm one of the houses in the settlement of Britishers was struck by lightening. All inmates in the house including two children were killed. They remained as ghosts.
Q.(iii) Why was Usha compelled to halt her journey back home ? What did she do ?
Answer : Usha was compelled to halt her journey back home due to the sudden, violent storm that made it difficult to see or walk. To seek shelter, she hurried into the ruins on the hill, where she waited for the storm to pass while sensing an eerie presence around her.
Q.(iv) Do you think that this was Usher’s first visit to the ruins ? Give any two reasons to support your answer.
Answer : No, I don’t think this was Usher’s first visit to the ruins. First, he seemed familiar with the place, moving confidently despite the storm. Second, his reaction to the surroundings suggested past experiences or memories tied to the location, indicating he had been there before and knew its history.
Q.(v) The last line of the story asks a question ‘was it just the wind ?’ Write your own opinion about this doubt and give at least one reason to support your answer.
Answer : In my opinion, it was not just the wind. The unusual intensity of the storm, along with the villagers’ fear and superstitions, suggests there may have been something more mysterious at play. Nature’s power is immense, but sometimes, unexplained events make people wonder if there’s a deeper force at work.
